Week #5 – In Class Photo Review

bomb time warner

New York Police outside the Time Warner Centre where the CNN studio’s are located, after the building was evacuated due to a bomb found, Wednesday October 24th.

I do not think that this picture shows what was actually going on at the time it was taken.  The police standing around, look like they are all on break and just relaxing and talking with each other, like nothing serious is going on.  If this picture did not show the news reporters, the picture would not really show much at all, in my opinion.  It does not show any type of chaos or that anyone is really concerned with what has been going on.

The point of view from the photographer is not bad.  Having arrows that are painted on the roads in the frame is the only thing that really shows any chaos.  Maybe that was what the photographer was looking for with the way they framed the shot.  So it would show something that makes the picture a little chaotic, since the police in the photo look like they are bored.

Photo Review My Choice – Week #4

Bike share launch party april 19th

This photo was taken for the ‘City News’ website to promote the City of Eugene’s bike share system, Peace Health Rides. The city held the launching party on Thursday, April 19th. The photo is bight as if it were a sunny day, although the ground looks as if it might have been raining, or had recently rained. Everyone in the picture is smiling, which portrays that the subjects are having a good time. The colorful dog may also be smiling in it’s own ‘dog way’. The scene in the photo is very simple and I feel that it doesn’t really show that there is an event going that is celebrating the start of the bicycle program.

My thoughts on the picture is that it should be a wider shot, to show that there are other people around and that there is a celebration going on at the time. I wonder by the way it is framed, if the celebration was not well attended. It says in the article that the picture was taken during the celebration at the EWEB park area, by the river. All in all a good photo, but it doesn’t show to me that there was anything really going on, other than three people and a dog going for a bike ride.

In class photo review – Week #4

Brewers, Dodgers, Baseball

(Photo by Keith Birmingham, Pasadena Star-News/SCNG

This photo documents a baseball game when Manny Machado, of The Dodgers, scored the winning run in the 13th inning of game 4 of the NLCS on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. This picture does a good job of showing the excitement of team-mate Yasmani Grandal and some of the crowd that was at the game. The picture shows everyone in the shot, very excited (except two that look like coaches on the far left of the picture). The photo shows that it seems to be a sunny day. The whites are blown out in the photo, but does not seem to distract too much from the feel and emotion of the picture. There is a lot going on in the picture, so it’s quite complex, but it works well in showing the excitement being portrayed by the photo. It looks like the photo was taken from ground level, from the side of the field.

Even though I was not at the game and I am not a fan of the team, the photo seems to do a good job of making me feel excited for their win. What seems to have been a long and exciting game. Even the brightness of the photo seems to help bring out the excitement. If it were a darker photo, it wouldn’t have the same feeling to it.

Week #3 Photo Review – Picture of my choosing.

civic stadium game

This picture of the historic baseball park, Civic Stadium, in Eugene, Oregon, which no longer exists, due to a fire that burned it to the ground. It brings me memories of going there as a child to watch the Eugene Emeralds play their local baseball games.  Even up to a couple of years ago.

This being a picture taken during a mostly sunny day, makes for a great picture of the baseball game that is being prepared to start.  Summer days, hotdogs, popcorn soda, and the excitement of a baseball game,  especially as a young person, can be a magical and memorable experience.  I think this picture gives a good view of the field and people, from the stands near third base, as the field is in the process of getting ready to start the game.  For many that knew this stadium, like myself, would feel the emotion behind a photo like this.  Civic Stadium will be missed by many.

Week #3 In class photo review

lady at table

This, to me, would be a documentary photograph.  A photo documenting a situation, emotion, desperation.  I like the bokeh in the image, blurring the background and the people in the background, and centering on the lady and the look on her face.  She seems to be unhappy, yet content, at the moment.  Along with the bokeh, the picture seems dark.  If it is just a under lit room, or the photo was edited that way, the darkness adds to the feeling of some type of desperation going on.

I get a feeling of wishing that I could help them, in some way.  To help take their pain away.  Just to talk with them and be a friend, or even to hold their hand in silence and just show that I amthere, and that I care.  Even a hug.

What I have seen and felt, from this picture, is much different than what I read in the article that was included.  I wrote this on my thoughts and feelings, not influenced by the article.

Week #2 – Review picture of my choice

Civic Stadium Fire

Civic Stadium, Eugene, Oregon.  Destroyed by fire.  Civic Stadium was a historic landmark, where the Eugene Emeralds baseball team called home, burned to the ground after a couple young boys had sneaked into, and were playing with fire, when the fire got out of control and burned the stadium to the ground.  The stadium was a much loved place of many happy times for many people over many years.

This picture brings back memories for me, of times I had gone to the stadium to watch and experience baseball games over the years.  I was just across the street while it was burning to the ground.  I had taken pictures of the fire, at the time, but I have since lost those pictures.  I remember people around me, while watching this, in tears, as memories of the good times, that people thought would continue into the future, came to an end.  This picture does well in showing the intensity of the fire.  The lone person in the frame of the picture, I think, brings a somber feeling to the feeling the picture portrays.  A sad, yet memorable, event in the history of Eugene, Oregon.

Week #2 – In Class Photo Review

Desperation and destruction effecting so many lives after a earthquake and tsunami, in Indonesia.  In this photo, I see a broad view of what I know would be such misery and horror for the people of this city.  So many lives lost, homes lost, possessions lost.  Not knowing how they will get through such devastation.  Seeing a ship that came into land and has demolished what looks like homes and businesses, shows the massive power of such a natural disaster.

This picture brings out my thoughts of seeing a broad view of such pain and sorrow and feeling of loss, that so many of the effected people are feeling.  Not knowing where they will go from here.  The horror of losing the lives of many friends and family.  I think the darkness from the cloudy sky adds to the way the picture shows the devastation.  A dreary feeling to the scene.  A nightmare that seems to have no end.

Week #1 photo review – my pick. Nashville Recording Artist from Springfield, Oregon.

scott1Scott Southworth, live in concert during his recent European tour.

This photo, to me, tells of a country music artist that after hard work for many years has started to pay off and he’s excited to be making it, being a Nashville Country artist, touring different parts of the world.  The hats on the people in the audience show devoted country music fans.  The acoustic guitar and the stand-up bass, on the stage, show it to be a country music setting.  The photo was taken to capture a moment in Scott’s life, where his hard work in the country music scene, has started to pay off, with a European tour and songs on the radio charts.

My personal feelings of this photo is that I am so proud of a friend of mine that has worked very hard through many years, to finally be making it as a Country Music, singer / songwriter, that now has songs on the radio, in the USA and through the European countries (where he is high on the charts).

Photo Review – Week 1

Hard work pays off for graduating U of O students.

Dreary weather didn’t hinder the excitement of the hundreds of those graduating.  Excitement of having made it through their studies and looking to the future of where it will take them in life.  Happy faces along with saddened hearts of those that will miss the friends they have made at the University, that they may lose connection with, now that they have graduated.

This photo brings to my mind all the different studies and experiences that each of the students have had during their journey through to graduation.  Those who have missed their friends and families that they will be going back home to.  Those friends they have made through the University.  The intense study time.  The laughs and smiles.  The stumbles they have made, all to get to this point… Graduation.  And where life goes from here.
